Stage 6: Reign of Terror The stage "reign of terror" occurs after the war which would usually occur between the new and old regime. The winning party of the battle would use fear against the people to gain control. There was no sign of 'Reign of Terror' after the Xinhai Revolution, as a new government was quickly established after the war. The Kuomintang had the people's support and did not have to resort to violence to be able to rule the people. However, there was a large number of casualties after and during the war, there were 170,000 deaths and injuries recorded in total in the rebellions and the battles between the revolutionaries and the Manchu Government.
Stage 7: Thermidorian Reaction The Thermidorian Reaction is the period of time after the revolution where the society recovers from the war and life begins to return to normal. On the 29th December, 1911, Sun Yat-Sen was elected as the provisional government of the Republic of China which was settled up 2 days later on 1st January, 1912. After the new government (the Kuomintang) was established, the people soon recovered from the revolution, and began to grow accustomed to the new government. However, due to the fact that even though Emperor Puyi had abdicated prior to the end of the revolution, he was later reelected as the Emperor of China, thus the revolution did not truly mark the end of monarchy in China.
